Hindsight is 20/20, they say. At any stage in life, most people will have some or the other regret about the decisions or choices that they previously made.

While regrets do not serve many positive purposes, you can surely use them to improve your judgment so that you are more at peace in the future. You will be more satisfied with how you lived your life.

In any case, most of us make some common mistakes which do not impact our present life in a big way; in fact they might even make us feel good for a while; but their aggregation over a long period leads to discontent and even disastrous results.

Here are 10 mistakes to avoid.

 1) Trying to be someone else – If you let go of your uniqueness and join the rat race to stay in the comfort of majority, you will surely regret it. If you are good at something offbeat, say painting on glass or surfing or running fast, you ought to improve your skills. Point is to find yourself and be happy with what you do. If your professional activities do not interest you then a brave decision will need to be made!

2) Hoarding money or valuables – Save money by all means but do not compromise on your joys. If you want to take that trip to Alaska, go ahead. You only have a limited time on the planet and the money won’t go with you once the time’s up! Use it to share and create joy for yourself and others. Selfless good deeds have permanence to them.

3) Playing to the crowd – Again this is a variant of trying to be someone whom you are not. If you try to please everyone around you all the time, not only will you fail miserably but you will also always be stressed. To improve your self-esteem, you do not need to depend on outside approval. Do what is right and do not hesitate to say ‘No’.

4) Procrastinating – Wasting time is the difference between staying ordinary and being truly extra-ordinary. There is much to do and delaying it till tomorrow just does not cut it. When you do things closer to the deadline, the quality of work inevitably goes down.

5) Staying in the comfort zone – You will need to branch out to grow and evolve. This means embracing change. Adapting to new circumstances seems daunting initially but is essential for progress. So if things are right do not hesitate to move places, change jobs or even switch careers.

6) Feeling entitled – You get what you deserve and what you did not get, you did not deserve. If you wish for fame and fortune, you will need to earn it because you are not entitled to anything without hard work.

7) Not being spontaneous – You cannot and should not plan everything. There is no greater joy than that of a pleasant surprise. Wake up on a weekend and go for a driving holiday. Call your friends over and watch a movie. Point is, you will wish to explore more if you are not bogged down by having to plan always.

8) Not spending enough time with close ones – In a recent survey, when people on their death beds were asked about their regrets, this one of the top ones. Make sure you don’t end up there. While career and money have their place; love, camaraderie and friendship are the essence of life. It is not the big deals that you negotiated but the happy moments that you spent with your family that you will cherish.

9) Accepting defeat easily – There will be many opportunities and excuses to give up on your dreams. You will need to build the character to not take them. Look to succeed in your relationships, your career and your spiritual journey. Do not give up on any aspect and do not settle for anything less than what the best of your abilities deserve.

10) Being selfish – Some of the best moments of your life will have been created by others, generally people close to you. In the same spirit, look to brighten the lives of people around you. It will be a miserable life if you spend it just thinking about yourself.
