5 Tips For Working Out In the Heat

Summer and heat go hand in hand. When it's hot and humid out, it's hard to want to do anything but stay inside in the air conditioning. But that doesn't mean we should allow ourselves to be lazy and not exercise. Our workouts should still be a priority.

With the sun setting later into the day allowing us to have more hours of sunlight, we need to take advantage of that and get outside. I'm not saying it's going to be easy to leave the comforts of your A/C, but it is possible! Take into these tips when you need to get off your butt and get outside!

1. Time of Day

This one may seem obvious, but it is important to stress that you need to consider the time of day when you are thinking about heading outside for a workout. Don't go out at noon when the sun is at it's highest. Try getting up earlier in the morning for a quick workout or wait until the sun sets. Also, be sure to factor in humidity before heading out.

2. Wicking Clothes

If you don't have proper workout gear already, you should invest in some now. Lightweight, breathable clothes are a must when it is hot out. You don't want your clothing to make you like you're getting weighed down, and you want to feel dry throughout your entire workout. Wicking materials help keep you dry and prevent swings in body temperature.

3. Hydration

Water, water, water! Drinking water all day is the best thing you can do if you plan to workout. We should already be drinking tons of water throughout our days, but if you plan to be active you better make sure you are hydrated. Being well hydrated will prevent you from feeling dizzy or having stomach cramps during your session.

4. Shorten/Split Workouts

Don't overexert yourself. Remember, you getting out there and exercising is already an amazing feat. Don't feel like you need to push yourself every workout or even to complete your regular workout you might have in the fall/winter. It's hot, so take it easy. Do a shorter workout or do part of it earlier in the day and the rest at night.

5. Workout Based on Temperatures

Change your workouts to fit the temperature. If it's unbearably hot outside, try taking a swim instead of going for a run. Do yoga in the park. Bike by the beach or lake. These are all great alternatives for a less intense cardio activity.
