A lot has been said about increasing your immunity against diseases and other health issues. For centuries, various cures have been suggested. Some have been complex formulations; others have been simple and to-the-point. There have also been “mystery” solutions. One of the easiest and simplest ways of helping your body fight against disease involves paying attention to your diet.

Why Diet?

Your body is a complex machine. Within it are the means of protecting you against micro bacterial invaders. Your immune system is the body’s defense system. Yet, it cannot operate to its full potential if it is not receiving the right fuel. The right fuel for your body on a daily basis is food.

If you eat the right amounts of certain foods, you can rev up your immune system. You can help it increase the amount of good bacteria in your body while eliminating or preventing the entry of bad bacteria. By eating right, you can actually increase your overall ability to fight off disease

Whether you are a vegan, a meat eater, lactose intolerant or allergic, there is a food for you that can help you improve your immune system’s ability to maintain a healthy body and a hale and hearty you. The following are considered to be beneficial in this respect.

  • Garlic: Garlic has always been a remedy to help keep people healthy. It is used to combat colds while promoting the growth of good bacteria in the stomach’s gut. It is also believed by many to counteract lead, mercury and other heavy metals. Garlic is something you can cook with adding it to pasta sauce, pizzas, soup and stews. Cooks use it in a salad dressing or stuffing or as part of a chicken dish.
  • Grapefruit: Grapefruit is high in fiber. As a result it helps to lower cholesterol. Yet, this fruit is a source of ascorbic acid. This helps to boost your body’s ability to absorb iron. In turn, this helps increase your immune system by giving it what it needs to fight off health issues.
  • Wheat Grass: This common “health food” is popular in juice bars at vegan restaurants and gyms. Containing more than 17 amino acids and high in vitamin A and C, wheat grass helps to build-up your immune system, detoxify the liver and restore cells.
  • Yogurt: Yogurt is a wonderful product and it serves to decrease bad bacteria in your stomach. Yogurt is most effective if it contains active culture.

Other foods to consider are shitake mushrooms, and any orange vegetable. This includes carrots, sweet potatoes and squash. Orange fruits such as oranges are also beneficial in helping improve and/or maintain your immune system.
